Thought I'd put this in here as there has been a little discussion in the Chat Box and may be useful as permanent record.

From the TSNZ 2009 Rules: (Lighting is in section 3.10 at the bottom.)

Quote:
3.0 RANGE STANDARDS
3.1 Ranges must have a line of targets and a firing line parallel to the target line. The firing line shall be clearly
marked with a line with a maximum width of 25mm. The firing points are located behind the firing line and must
be numbered to correspond with the targets.
3.2 Ranges may be of either 18.288 meters (20 yards) or 22.860 meters (25 yards) +/-50mm (2 inches). The length
of the range is to be determined by measurement of the shortest distance between the forward edge of the firing
line and the face of the targets.
3.3 The firing point shall preferably be flat. If sloped, any slope shall be towards the rear and the grade not more
than 87mm in each 2 meters.
3.4 The firing point may be equipped with permanent padding not exceeding 25mm thick uncompressed.
3.5 The range shall be constructed with suitable protection that, under all normal conditions, will prevent any
projectile from exiting the range perimeter.
3.6 All ranges shall have provision for the firing of warming shots while the competitor is on the firing point and in
accord with Rule 2.7.
3.7 All ranges, both permanent and temporary, must be inspected and certified, prior to use, by a Range Safety
Inspector appointed by the TSNZ Executive. For permanent ranges re-inspection shall be required when
substantial alterations or modifications are made to the range. For temporary ranges the Range Certificate shall
specify the approved period of use.
3.8 It is the responsibility of the affiliated body concerned to make application to TSNZ for any required inspection.
3.9 Each range shall be equipped with a red safety light, controlled by the Range Officer, with which to indicate to
competitors when firing is not permitted. Where this requirement is not practicable or warranted, the Range
Safety Inspector may waive it.
Note: Range Certificates, a list of Range Safety Inspectors and recommendations on range construction, target
heights, lighting and ventilation are available from the TSNZ Administration Officer.
3.10 All ranges must have artificial illumination providing the necessary amount of light without glare or distracting
shadows on the targets or firing points. The entire area must be evenly illuminated.
Targets must be illuminated evenly with not less than 1000 lux. The background area, behind the targets must
be a non-reflecting, medium, neutral colour. If fluorescent lights are used, multiple tubes working “out of phase”
must be provided.
Measuring of the target illumination (minimum of 1000 lux) must be done with the measuring device held at the
level of the target and pointed towards the firing point.
Measuring general range illumination must be done with the measuring device held at the firing point, midway
between the firing point and the target line, with the device directed towards the ceiling illumination.

I see there is no "specific" requirement mentioned for intermediate lighting down the range, but at Wanganui I recall there being a chart posted on the wall detailing the various readings down the range and was a topic of interest to several shooters who were talking about minimum standards.
I'll try to find out more.

Most if not all ranges have standard bulbs that shot on, with the new lighting there is not as much light as I normally have however now looks pretty much the same as the ranges I shoot on.

I am at Riccarton Mall ATM using the Dick Smith computers ;-)

Danny, another place you can look for guidence is the ISSF rules, rule 6.3.17 which can be download from their web sight in compressed format of about 5,35 Mb from here: http://www.issf-shooting.org/antidoping/rules_regulations.ashx .
In answer to Wheelz question the ISSF recomendation for lighting within the body of an indoor range is 300 lux min and 500 lux recomended.
hope this helps

That looks familiar. I guess the guys here were trying to achieve those ISSF standards and did a great job of it too I must say.
I'm pretty sure our lighting is flouro's. I know our club ones are.

I when looking for a LUX reader today and I think I already have one built in with my super dupa cannon 580 flash so I am going out to have a play.

Got some 40 Walt light bulbs 60 Walt light bulbs and 75 walt light bulbs when to 3 supermarkets to get 100 Walt light bulbs and they are all out of stock!

As I have 4 light bulbs in 1.8 mtr area I should be able to get the right lighting using standard light bulbs however when I am feeling rich I may get flouro's

I will let you know how much light I have at the end of the range if I can work out how to use my flash!

As I have my camera I better take some pictures of the new LIGHTS!!

Re Your Light meter in the camera. A light meter measures radiance FROM a target. A lux meter measure light ONTO a target. There is a difference. The camera relies of seeing the light that is reflected. Imagine a white target would send back more light than a black target. So it isn't very useful unles you know what the reflectance of the target is. I wrote an article on range lighting somewhere around the era the Shooting Journal was around. If anyone has a copy of it I would appreciate a copy as well as mine has walked. It is still relevant except that the ISSF have now raised the lux levels to "at least" values rather than "between".
Dick smith sell lux meters but they are not very accurate. Even the one I borrow from Light Standards at the Measurement Standards Laboratory has a 10% correction.

I can expand on this subject if you like. But if anyone can find the article it would be useful.....:-)

That not a bad setup. May I suggest that you add some collunmators (fancy word for blinkers) to the top, ie above the light bulbs and paint the underside white. this should help direct the light towards the targets. The idea is that the light is directed at the targets and not about the range and will help maintain the contrast between the targets and the rest of the range nearby.
Also one big fluro accross all targets will help mantain an even light accross the target(s) with the added benifit of less power consumption for the same light output.

Matter of interest, what targets are you using??? Seem to be bigger than the ones we use. Would you do me a favour and post me two? See address in private.

At the Royal Tiger in Wgtn we have 500W Halogens between the mound and the targets. When we had a lighting expert check our range before we installed these he said "your're shooting in moonlight" Prior to this we had ordinary bulbs

As per ISSF the lighting was increased due to TV requirements and the Beijing finals hall is actually indoor so more artificial light had to be provided.
