Hard to know which would be more of a bother, fussing around for another bullet or resquadding for 1 shot (plus 1 sighter).

Wheelz I had occasion last week when range officering to pull up 2 shooters on separate occasions for loading before the command (after the match was completed).
One said they only placed round in chamber but not closed bolt and thought that was OK, I replied that even if the round was on the loading plate the rifle was considered loaded. They accepted that they were wrong with grace.
The other said they were going to fire another warmer and decided not to, yeah right, I observed when the round was placed in the chamber and the bolt slid forward but not locked and that was after the shooters were asked if all warmers were completed and were shooters ready to commence. Were they trying to conceal the round in the chamber by sliding the bolt forward? Who knows? I would be less accommadating next time (grumpy? hell yes)
I agree with your comment

Hey there,

My rifle constantly miss fires some targets I have had it happen more than once, It can throw you off the best thing to do is take a few breaths and try again, at a offical competiton the rules say to leave the bullet and get a replacement from the range officer. I have done this before (only at the A and F tho)
Otherwise I just pop it out carefully and then reload with the same bullet, and I have never had any trouble with a reloaded bullet. they can still shoot 10.1's

When my rifle miss fires we take the bolt apart and give it a clean, dad has also looked at the spring in the bolt and the firing pin, My rifle bolt has got to the point where dad rekons he will have to take it to work and do a bit of welding on it. its the firing pin wearing down that can cause this problem.

Has it been dry-fired a lot with the pin striking the breech?

I don't have a problem with my FWB bolt or firing pin however if it had a problem firing I am sure re-loading would be fine, however of you had a dud bullet and it fired and did not make it down the barrel and you continued to fire the next round you could screw ya barrel or would need to stop and check your barrel was clear.

Do not know if this could happen anyone heard of it happening or am I dreaming?

Ok Phillie, so because this is something you could expect to happen, do you take out an extra round or do you always have success with the miss-fired round?
Curious because I've never encountered it with a target rifle and therefor haven't considered dealing with the eventuality.

Well if it miss-fired and after ejecting found it to be minus a projectile and there was no hole in the target, I'd be checking the barrel alright!
I've had it happen on my old sporting rifle using .22 shorts.

I had my first malfunction last week during NDC. Bullet had some how got so creased it wouldnt load into chamber. I asked for help & range officer helped me extract now jambed bullet went out to my case to get an replacement. I too had lost position and took a couple of 9's before getting right. I would now shoot that shot last. But wouldnt have helped the other night as it was while trying to extract shell that I lost position. Thats shooting. Environs (managed a 100.4 for my 10shot)

Now heres a thing, Phillie if you got an old Anshutz, there are a couple of things you can do:
1. try fitting a new firing pin spring, they only cost a few dollars and last time I checked Potts At TSNZ, the shop had a stock for most models. Surprising as it may seem the springs do tend to loose their tension after a period of time as evidenced by their shortening.
2. Losen the screws retaining the trigger assy to the bottom of the action and firmly hold the trigger Assy to the rear of the action while you re-tighten the screws, this action will ensure that the trigger assy is held as far back in the action as possible ensuring the longest possible stroke of the firing pin for a positive strike on the rim of the cartridge. Sounds weird but over time the trigger assy can slip forward on the mount screws giving rise to your problem.

I dont even bother taking a extra round with me when I shoot, I havent had any go off completely wild unless I was the problem. but In a major competition I do bring extra rounds with me just to keep within the rules.

My Dad also said that if a round miss fires put it in and try again if it doesnt go off the second time try again after three times you can be fairly sure that the bullet is a dud.

he also said that if a bullet gets stuck in the rilfe and doesnt fire than if you put another one in by accedent it will just push the other one out considering air pressure in the barrel. he also said that at Tai Tapu a young fela delibritly separated the lead point from the shell and fired a bullet through the rifle with the extra lead in it and it fired two holes in the target (bullet shaped) becouse it slows the bullet down and it "tumbles" He said it would be unlikely to explode in the barrel.

Well knowing my luck and the cost off a new barrel verse the cost of new bullet I think I will be asking the Range Officer for a new one! And if it puts the other shooters off I may take them out ;-)

Now tell ya dad to setup account! I can setup and email address for him (or anyone wanting one)
