Last night I had my 1st miss fire using Elly Match (Speed 1068) the pin had a good hit on it but did not fire.

Tania Van Zuylen shooting next to me said just put it back in and try again, the range officer asked if I would like a new bullet so I said yes and waited for the extra bullet then used it and continued, I lost my position some how and the next 3 shots were high nines keeped working on it until I got it back even though I wanted to go 2 clicks down and it came back on the last two shots.

Now the range officer said if a bullet miss fires it would have been better to just continue shooting and on the last shot use the replacement bullet I agree with that and think it would have helped me.

Also said not to try using the miss fired bullet as it may not leave the barrel and on your next shot kill your rifle.

After the match I looked at the bullet and the lead was not connected to the cartridge but you couldn't pull it apart without a hammer ;-)

After shooting 99.5, 98.7 this sure didn't help the 96.1 with the miss fire! and after that 100.4

I hope this helps others handle miss fires!

Tania Van Zuylen said it put her off as well and I said no it didn't you let it put you off ;-)

What would you do?

I must admit I hadn't thought about it. So now I guess I would ask for another bullet & use it last.

Where did the range officer get the bullet from? Was it one of yours?
It would have been interesting to weigh that bullet to see if the weight varied to the others...No priming???

What do the rules say about a missfire in a comp? Can you refuse the rest of the target and shoot it again? It would be tempting if you lost concentration or the target was below par.
Have to check it out.

I still have the bullet so I will keep it until I can weigh it.

The range office is real good (Andrew Ross) he when and got my bullets and showed me the batch of my box and handed the bullet to me, so I had peace of mind to shoot my high nine LOL

The other thing was if I put it back in and tried again and it miss fired again I would have needed a new bullet any way AND I would have been to shots down!

Yep, now you know what happens you'll be ok.
I suggest to avoid misfires, you get better ammo that doesn't misfire, like LAPUA!!!

Well I think you should only have the required bullets to do the job, this way no one can say you over loaded on there Card.

I had someone overload on my sighters in the weekend and no one owned up it was my third sighter and when I looked there were four holes! one was a nine! not my one!

The person with the box would look guilty

In a perfect world I would agree, but since it couldn't be proven, and seldom can, it comes down to honesty and integrity. I think I'd still be inclined to take one extra.
After all, if you only use two sighters you'll still have one left.

I'm with wheelz, I think it a good idea to have an extra round as insurance. Might start doing just that.

I've been informed that rules used to state that you can only bring on the required no. of rounds, but that was rescinded.

Yes I understand the rules, however when someone shoots your sighters in a competition and you are not sure were your one when it would be good if "honesty and integrity" came into play however no one said O sorry it was mine, they range officer was looking at everyones card and by that time all add three on there cards!

Hey folks there are lots of rat bags out there and some get caught and offer up all sorts of pifling excuses which you know are just that and some except that a mistake has been made, and some dont get caught, that is up to the range officer to do his job. You know your own integrity, just get on with shooting good shots and if worried about misfires there is nothing in the rules to say you can't have extra ammo with you, just let the range officer know what has happened AS SOON AS IT HAPPENS with the least amount of fuss so as not to disturb other shooters unduly.

That's right. After all, if people take advantage of the over-taxed range officer who are they fooling anyway?
There's another one that's abused too:
Loading the rifle after the warmers have gone.
I know people do it 'cos the sighters are going only a few seconds after the call is given. Man, it's not like there isn't enough time.

Where a missfire occurs then it is my opinion that it is a malfunction and the following rule(s) Paticularly 11.24 apply:

11.23 MALFUNCTIONS
Where a rifle or accessory develops a mechanical malfunction that prevents the competitor from completing a
target, the competitor shall be permitted to complete the target in a later detail or squad, once the fault has been
rectified. The competitor may also elect to use a substitute rifle or accessory.
11.24 The only defective cartridge that shall be recognized is one where the projectile does not leave the muzzle end
of the barrel. Once the blockage has been cleared another cartridge may be used and the shoot completed in
accordance with Rule 11.26. Where a projectile leaves the muzzle end of the barrel and for any reason
whatsoever does not hit any target, the competitor shall lose the shot.
11.25 If a shoot cannot be completed within the allotted time for any reason outside the competitor’s control, other
than the provisions set out in Rules 11.23 or 11.24, the competitor shall have the right to claim completion of the
shoot in accordance with Rule 11.26.
11.26 Where a competitor elects to complete a shoot under Rules 11.23 or 11.24 or 11.25, one sighting shot, plus
time equivalent to one minute per counting shot remaining shall be allowed to complete the target.
