At that rate you could afford to give your worn out rifle to an up and coming shooter in the Waikato who could change the firepin, hint hint. wink

What do you mean "still trying to bed it in"? It's an aluminium stock, you check factory prescribed tourque settings and shoot it. confused Environs

Have you had the bolt apart yet Danny? the first time I pulled mine apart I found it had a lot of grease packed around the firing pin and spring - too much for my liking so I took some out and also cleaned out the hole in the bolt right through. To me, you only need enough grease to make things slippery, too much and it actually creates drag, slowing the firing pin - enough to stop it from striking the bullet hard enough to make it go.
When you put it all back together again just check the spring and pin for evidence of things rubbing on the inside of the bolt and make sure everything is correctly aligned, If there are shiny patches on the spring and/or pin then that is an indication that things haven't been aligned properly or that the pin may be bent leading to excessive drag. Of course you will have taken note of how it was assembled as you pulled it apart.
As you slide the firing pin & spring assy back into the bolt you can check that everything is ok by feeling for excessive drag or rubbing by sliding the assy in & out and feeling just how much drag there is.
I wouldn't advise taking the spring off the firing pin as it is a very strong little bugger and the retaining collar is just sooo fiddly to get back on.
Also don't forget to apply a wee dab of gun grease or machine oil on the bolt where the handle slips over and also on the handle locking lugs where the would lead into the locking grooves, (just look for the little shiney bits on the lugs and put a dab of grease there).
Hope I haven't scared you off.

In my experience of target shooting it is more common to be a rifle fault that causes a miss fire as I have previously outlined in this thread. Yes there is the odd round that might fail but no where near as much as the rifle, but then I have only been smallbore shooting since 1996 or there abouts.

Whipper snapper....

I had a misfire - or really a dud - in the BSA match a few years ago. "Plop!" and it reached the 7 ring!

Then there was the richochet off the floor into the 2nd from the left top target for an 8 after I acccidently let one go pointed a the floor. Didn't notice it until I got to the top row and found a sideways hole in it!!! I humbly accepted the acclamation!!! Card finished a 198!!!!

Miss doubt Fire ??? lol
or
Missfire???
You must thoroughly clean the fire pin and the hole over Head of bolt where the pin comes out.
You use a round twine of cotton and you slide it back and forth through the hole of bolt with lateral force and slightly on the edge of the hole.
Often are the ammunition ( 90%)to cause malfunction but sometimes is caused by dirt ( 10% ).
Or Headspace too wide and too thin Rim.
I have often tried to shoot cartridges missfired and I shot 10!
Once the pin has beaten 3 times and the shot did not leave!

During a competition if a cartridge misfires you have only to discard it and replace it with new !

In training three years ago a friend of mine has heard shootig flop... the cartridge was fired ... nothing on the target....he loads the rifle again and fired .... loud bang .... then check the rifle, removed the bolt ... Seized up bullet into the barrel. He goes to a gunsmith and remove the bullet, the barrel to the control in middle had an injury due to high pressure .... barrel to be thrown, a bullet has expelled the other !

Anomalous shot .... I fired a shot .22 in another competition ..... bang amazing ..... and the shooter at my right turns and says: What fucking ammunition are you using?? .308?.... with a so strong bang .... you made a 3 in the top left!
no 10 in mouches !!!??

If you own A FWB then there might be a few problems extracting the unfired cartrige. I have never had a round refuse to fire but during a cease fire and unload command I have not been able to extract the unfired cartrige and I am not the only one who has suffered this problem, most of the later model FWBs I have come across also suffer the same problem and if you had to, you would need to use tools to remove the cartrige.

Grumpy.
Anschutz to this problem does not happen because the extractor is efficient.
But 10 years ago with my 1913 I happened a problem during a competition. After 10 or 12 rounds I could hardly push in the cartridge into the chamber and after the shot the extractor could not eject the cartridge case. I stopped but I do not find the problem, to finish the race I was forced to pull out all cartridge case with a screwdriver.
At home I understand! A tiny piece of lead in the chamber of the cartridge that was friction! Sometimes it is better to give a soft hand with the brush of bronze in the combustion chamber.

Max,
The rifle performs Ok but will not extract unfired cartrige as I said and no matter what I do it will not do the job, any other FWB that I have tried this with has the same problem. The extractors on the bolt seem to be strong enough and never have the problem with a spent cartrige. We just think it is due to the rifling having such a tight grip of the projectile. Maybe that the rifling is shaving a little lead off the projectile and causing the problem as you descibed above????
